Music Video Production Done Right
While the product of music production may look easy, in reality it is much more complicated than it appears. It is not as simply as producing a sound recording of a band, even if the video shows nothing more than the band itself. It would be very unusual for the band to perform live for a video. More often than not, the sound recording is done first and the pictures added later. Accomplishing this is quite a skill, as the whole process will need to be synchronized. And should the video contain other material, which many do, this will actually make the job somewhat easier.
In order to shoot a good video, it is essential to have every step painstakingly planned out in advance. While you will want some spontaneity to add to the merits of the video, it must fit within the context of the overall planned effect. The results of a video produced without any planning will not seem spontaneous; it will just seem poorly produced. On the other hand, should something unexpected happened during the shooting of a well-planned video, there is a good chance it might add the desired effect, and it may wind up being left in.
Next comes the soundtrack, the second feature, which must be just right. Pictures added to the production can be slowed down or made faster so that they are in perfect synchronization with the sound recording. When producing a music video it is important that the band be the focal point of the whole production. By making the sound recording first, you leave time to repeat this process several times, as this element is crucial. With modern recording techniques and instruments, it will be easy to monitor the tempo.
Because so many music videos are being produced these days, the job of producing them has become a specialized, full-time career for many. In accomplishing this, you will need all of the basic skills of the audio record producer, but in addition, you will need the skills of a cameraman. Even if you are only going to oversee a portion of the operation, you will still need to understand all the different parts in order to achieve a satisfying result. Having amateur experience with both camera and audio work will definitely be to your advantage.
Because of the complexity of modern music video production, there are college courses dedicated to this subject alone. While you can study for these, even without the background experience, there is still no doubt that someone who has worked in a recording studio comes to this field with a distinct advantage. If you are young and have time on your side, it is a good idea to consider learning the techniques of audio production before advancing to video. However you decide, you will be able to learn online and fit your studies around your other commitments. If you keep up a sustained course of study, you can gain the necessary skills required for music video production.
