This is a highly competitive career, and you will need formal qualifications in order to even think of being a part of it. In many instances, the title of engineer is restricted by law to those who have acquired specific, formal qualifications.
With the ongoing development of new technology, the role of the engineer in the music production studio has evolved to keep up with these changes. Previously, a sound engineers concerns would mainly be the set up of the studio. Microphones would need to be positioned correctly to make sure that the balance between voices and instruments was accurate, along with eliminating any unwanted interference. While this still forms an integral part of the job, today there is so much more involved, as the modern engineer has also come to play a huge part in terms of affecting the outcome of the actual recording.
Today the sounds are manipulated not just at the end, but at the very moment in which the track is actually being created. This is possible due to the way modern instruments integrate with the recording equipment. The engineer might also be the one coaching the musicians, helping them to produce the appropriate sound which matches their creative vision, something he will have done with other groups in the past. In the hands of an experienced, creative engineer, even a raw and inexperienced band can turn out a polished and professional result in their very first time in the studio.
